Our Story

A favourite childhood toy turned into a hobby and now a business

“A Little Piece of Home” is a classic example of a hobby turned into a business. It started a long time ago when, as a child I became hooked on Lego. For someone such as myself it was the perfect toy. Naturally drawn towards science and engineering, Lego provided an outlet for me to explore construction and engineering skills, whilst also encouraging my creativity and imagination.

As I left childhood behind, Lego got put aside for a while, but never really left me and any excuse to re-acquaint myself with it was eagerly leapt upon. My own children developed an interest which I was only too keen to encourage. By my middle years, with time and some disposable income to play with I rekindled my passion for Lego fully and became what many term an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego!).

The true origin story for this business however stemmed from disaster. My eldest daughter and her husband had just bought their first house – a real ‘fixer-upper’. They worked astonishingly hard to renovate a neglected but pretty little townhouse and had made amazing progress.

Then as a result of a catastrophic combination of natural and manmade circumstances, the town they lived in was hit with a once in a lifetime flood situation. Their cosy dream house filled with water and they lost almost everything of value.
Unperturbed by disaster, they rented a house nearby and set about refurbishing their house once again, this time taking great pains to defend against the risk of flood. As the day approached for them to move back in, I thought it would be nice to give them a unique ‘house-warming’ gift and I set about making a replica of their house from Lego.

This first replica was well received and formed a nice talking point for people who visited them, many of them suggested that I should ‘sell these’. The first few such suggestions I largely dismissed as ‘polite praise’ but I continued to make models for friends and family (and myself) and the calls to sell them continued to come in until I got to the point where I thought ‘Why Not?’.

And so ‘A Little Piece of Home’ was formed.
