Lego Modular House

Your Home in LegoLand...

From £600

Every year, Lego release 1 or 2 new models in their ‘Modular Building’ range.

These are large, high-quality, detailed models which are designed to interconnect with one another so you can build your own Lego street or town.

Famously, the name ‘Lego’ comes from the Danish words that mean ‘Play Well’ and one of the great benefits of the Modular Building range is that, as well as being superb models to look at, they are very interactive and encourage play. The Modular approach means that individual floors can be separated from one another, giving ready access to the beautifully designed interiors.

We can develop a model based around your own home that meets the Modular Building standards so you can place your own house in the middle of your bustling Lego Street/City.

Modular Houses offer unique challenges but can be the most fun models of all, not least because they are not necessarily intended to just be looked at. There is something uniquely pleasing to see your house as part of a wider Lego street scene, alongside classic sets such the Book Shop and the Town Hall.

The challenge is purely one of scale. Lego Modular Building need to adhere to a few design conventions in order for them all to be connectable to one another. This places practical limits on the size of the model which can be challenging. For example, all modular building have a maximum depth of 32 'studs' from front to back. There is no specific width limit although conventionally the 'official' Lego sets have been either 16, 32 or 48 studs wide.

From a design perspective, this 32 stud depth limitation means that it may not possible to faithfully recreate the true layout of houses which are deeper than they are wide. Additionally, because Modular Buildings are intended to coexist side by side, features such as front Gardens and drives may need to be abandoned. When we design a 'Modular', we will try to reflect the essence of your house - within the constraints of the Modular Building standard.

Example Modular Building Design

Technically the house that is the subject of this build is an end-of terrace house with a path down the side. The first design decision taken was to ignore the path and make it a fully connected modular building, thereby freeing up a lot of build space.

The next issue was that the house was nearly twice as deep as it was wide when you include an extension housing a kitchen and a recently added conservatory. This forced the design to 'squash' most of the rooms in the house and make them smaller (i.e. not as deep) as they actually are.

You will also see in the original photo there is a front garden and driveway. These needed to be sacrificed to avoid 'squashing' the internal rooms even further, so the model house now opens up directly onto the street, but there is sufficient space at the front of the house for the model to not be protruding into the street to far ensuring a harmonious linking into the street scene.

There is a large rounded bay window to the front of the house. Whilst Lego does make curved window bricks, there are no similar shaped bricks for the brickwork, so the bay window was created as an angled set of straight windows.

The pitch of the roof may look wrong, but the original photo is misleading and when viewed from other angles, the roof proportion is quite a reasonable approximation to the real thing.

The upstairs windows are slightly smaller than the original building but this was taken to avoid an overly tall upper storey. This is a great example of the sort of design decision that can be discussed with the customer to ensure we get an acceptable result. In this case, is it better to keep the overall proportions of the building representative or to focus on the proportions of individual elements such as doors and windows?

Note also that the front door is a standard Lego white door, whereas the one in the original is a lime-green colour. If this was an issue, we can create a 3D print of a door in a closer colour match and matching the actual door design for a small additional fee.

One of the great joys of modular buildings is that the individual layers of the building can be easily separated from one another to give play access to the interior rooms and as you can see this has been fully implemented in this model.

Modular Houses are a great choice if you are already a Lego Modular Building collector and want to place your own home in the middle of your collection. They are also great choices if you want to play with the model rather than just look at it! We offer a huge range of options and extras to make your Modular House even more enjoyable.
